Russell Dillingham > Lewiston firefighters sweep up debris from an accident at the corner of Ash and Lisbon Streets in Lewiston Thursday morning.  The drivers of both vehicles claim that they had a green light, and according to Lewiston Police officer Randy Hausman, there were no witnesses to the accident, so neither Leon cormier of Moncton, New Brunswick, the driver of the truck, nor Chris Monihan of Auburn will be cited.  A passenger in Monihan's vehicle was slightly injured and taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.  Traffic on Lisbon Street was shut down from Pine Streets to Lisbon Streets a little after 8:00 when the accident happened and was still closed as of 9:00  so the tree, which survived a similar accident recently, had to be cut up and removed.

Russell Dillingham > Lucy McLean gives the Easter bunny a big hug on her way out of the Lewiston Armory Saturday afternoon after the 14th annual Easter egg hunt.  Sponsored by the Lewiston Recreation Department, highlights included music by local DJ Dave Dionne, bead making, the “Bounce,” face painting, games, Easter bunnies, as well as representatives from the Lewiston Police, Fire and Public Works Departments, Police Athletic League and Lewiston school clubs. According to Director of Recreation Maggie Chisholm, who had to zip out after the first hour to get more candy and eggs after going through 1,500, it was the largest crowd by far the event has ever seen.

Russell Dillingham > Steve Lambert, left of Lewiston and Lauren Freitas of Auburn, work together to stop a shot by the opposing team during a friendly game of Goalball at the Hasty Memorial Armory in Auburn Saturday morning.  The event was put on by the National Federation of the Blind of Maine, with instruction from Mark Sinclair from the New England Blind Athletes Association.  The sport was designed for blind athletes, but anyone  is incouraged to try it as everyone playing must wear eyeshades.  For more information on upcoming events, including another day of goalball coming up May 25th, contact Patricia Estes at 783-0325.

Russell Dillingham > Ray Gagne boils down some sap that he collected around his North River Road farmhouse in Greene Monday afternoon.  "It went from summer back to winter and they pretty much stopped running.  I'm just boiling down what I have left that was frozen before tomorrow's storm.  With the forecast, I hope to be back at it next week."  The retired retails sales representative came back to his roots instead of going the warmer climates like so many people told him to do.  "I just love it here in Maine and have so much fun doing things like this. I did this when I was a kid, and now am doing it again just for fun.  A couple years ago I drove past somebody doing it, and thought about doing it myself, so I pulled out this old stove we had and bought a stainless steel pan.  I figured I'd tap 15-20 trees, but ended up with 40 the first year.  I'm up to 125 this year.  Last year I got 10 gallons that I share with friends and family."

Russell Dillingham > Peter Karwowski of Brunswick tells Auburn firefighters how he was traveling down outer Minot Avenue in the right hand lane, going 35 mph,when two cars sped past him, sending up sheets of snow and water that sprayed onto his windshield, temporarily blinding him.  He veered into the snowbank and hit a telephone pole before flipping over.  He crawled out on his own, and refused medical help.  "I'm pretty sure my nose is broken."  he said before heading to a nearby restaurant for a drink and a steak while he figured out what to do next.

Russell Dillingham > Railroad workers work to get one of 5 railroad cars back on the tracks at the Route 219 railroad crossing in Leeds early Friday morning.  Several crews, including ones from Guilford, Pan Am freight and Maine DOT were working feverishly to get the trains back on the tracks by wedging a series of wooden blocks under the wheels and inching the railroad car forward in a slow, but well practiced procedure.  There have been several derailments at this location over the past few years.

The team is part of the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA League.  It was the last day of the current session.  An new 8 week instructional program that includes several competitions for ages 3-18 begins Wednesday.  There is always openings available. Russell Dillingham > An Auburn Police officer talks with Kourtney Williams, the driver of the car at right on Main Street in Lewiston after making a traffic stop. The car was spotted heading across the Longley Bridge with a flat tire. Williams was taken into custody after he admitted he didn't have a license. Police investigated the damage to the front end of the car he was driving to see whether it matched damage to a vehicle at the scene of an assault on Winter Street that occurred shortly before Williams was stopped.

"There are about 30 of us who go to school here and hang out here and cruise around the trails.  I have gone over 300 miles so far this year, but none of it on any lakes.  It's just not safe yet.  It's a tradgedy what happened up in Rangeley, and it's about 15 degrees colder there, so that tells you it's not safe around here yet.  With all the trails in the area, there is no need to go out on the lakes now."
