Robert Cloud Jr. of Bryant Pond, who correctly identified the covered bridge in Newry, which spans the Sunday River. Robert said he once worked for Sunday River Ski Area and brought many visitors to the bridge for moose tours, outdoor adventures and wedding ceremonies that took place on the bridge. Built in 1872, the structure is named the Artist’s Bridge because of its reputation as being the most photographed and painted of the covered bridges in Maine. Using an
87-foot Paddleford truss construction, the bridge was closed to motorized traffic in 1958 when a new bridge was built downstream. It is located about 4 miles northwest of North Bethel.
