A cattle egret sits on the hood of a car in the parking lot of St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston Thursday afternoon. The bird, which seldom is seen this far north, has been flying from one vehicle to another most of the day. According to Nancy Sferra, Director of Science and Stewardship at The Nature Conservancy/Maine Field Office in Brunswick, the birds are native to Africa, and are now wintering throughout the US and breed in much of the eastern seaboard south of Massachusetts.
