Mystery photo for June 21, 2015 When Route 4 was just a horse path, there was a 100-acre farm at 1755 Auburn Road in Turner known as the Mabel Kraft Farm. In 1980, Jim Posik bought the property and ran a car business there. He and his wife currently run an antique shop in a sprawling display of stuff called The Pleasant Past. According to information from the couple, “The place is filled with roughly 50 years of antiques, collectibles and junk, with more old stuff arriving every week.” Brenda Newman of Livermore drives Route4 a lot and recognized the sign for The Pleasant Past, and was randomly selected as our contest winner.

Mystery Photo for January 11, 2015 Several dozen people correctly guessed that last week’s mystery photo was taken at Range Pond State Park in Poland. A few, who were on the First Day’s Hike initiative Jan. 1, correctly guessed that the photo was taken on that day. In a random drawing from the correct entries, Terryl and Esther Jensen of Minot were chosen as the winner of a $10 Dunkin Donuts™ gift card. While many poeple frequent the park in the summer, many have no idea that it is also open during the winter months. There are numerous hiking, cross country and snowshoe trails and an everexpanding mountain bike trail system that is open year ‘round.

There were a few cheesy calls and some saucy emails concerning last week’s mystery photo, but the winner, Kristi Norcross of Auburn, chosen by a random drawing from all the correct entries, told us that she drives past Heathco’s Pizza & Variety “every day,” so it was easy for her to identify the mural on the wall at the well known store at the top of Goff Hill in Auburn. The mural, painted this past summer by local artist Patrick Connell, was the brainchild of Heathco’s co-owner, Mary Nicholson. According to her partner, Fred Heathco, they were looking for something tospruce up the blank wall and attract attention. She had some ideas about what she wanted and she and Connell collaborated and came up with the fun mural.

Many people recognized the cupola that is visible throughout the Twin Cities. A few added that the lights in the foreground are those that shine on the walkway between the mill complex and the former train trestle, now a pedestrian bridge, that spans the Androscoggin River. Terrence King of Monmouth, who correctly identified the artwork on the retaining wall behind the Mill Street clubhouse of the Great Falls Model Railroad Club. The club was having problems with graffiti being painted on the wall before they hired a local graffiti artist, Brian Serfes, to paint a railroadthemed mural on the wall. Serfes and a friend did just that, and since, King said, there has been no tagging on the wall. The mural is beginning to show some wear, King said.

Several readers correctly identified last week’sMystery Photo as the water fountain on the back lawn of the Norway Town Complex that encompasses the town offices, police department and fire department. There were numerous calls and emails that incorrectly identified last week’s mystery photo as the Gingerbread House in Norway. However, several others correctly guessed that the photo was of the former Fahey Funeral Home and Guy B. Dostie Funeral Home at 101 Pine Street in Lewiston. Karen Pelletier of Lewiston, who manages the Social Center across the street, recognized the snowman that sits in the cupola window as she looks out at it regularly when she comes out of the building. One of the steel sculpted native Americans created by Gene Boivin on the banks of the Androscoggin River behind the Rumford Information Center on Route 2. The official name of the park, which contains several metal sculptures by Boivin, is J. Eugene Boivin Park.The park is at the base of Pennacook Falls,often referred to as Rumford Falls,which have the largest vertical drop east of Niagara Falls.Dexter Billings of Mexico was chosen in a random drawing from more than 100 correct entries as the winner ofa$10 Dunkin Donuts™gift card. Billings,who said “I’ve been there amillion times,”remembers seeing it for the first time when he went to watch the July 4th fireworks when they used to fire them off by the falls.

Very few people correctly identified last week’s mystery photo. In a random drawing, Michelle Stevens of Lewiston was selected as the winner of a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. Stevens grew up near Bates College and walked through the campus many times as a child. “I have been interested in art since I was young, and stopped and admired the artwork when I first noticed it in front of Olin Arts Center at Bates.” The sculpture, titled “What’s Going On,” was created by renowned artist Joel Perlman in 1984. According to the International Sculpture Center “Perlman has been creating complex sculptures out of steel, bronze and aluminum since the early 1970s. While minimalism was the predominant style of his genration, Perlman chose to push his forms into ever-more complicated, gravity-defying configurations.”

There were numerous calls and emails about last week’s mystery photo, but only a few correctly identified the train that sits on top of the gazebo on the Bryant Pond Town Common in Woodstock. The gazebo was donated by the Chase family. According to Jennifer Chase, she and several of her family members got together and bought a kit and helped put it together. They dedicated it to her father and his two brothers, all of whom were well known and instrumental in the development of the area. Because the old train station was located in about the same spot as the gazebo, Jennifer searched out and found the copper weather vane at a local shop in Acadia. While doing errands last week, Lois Ruff of Bryant Pond drove past the weather vane and it dawned on her that she might have seen it in the Sunday paper. “I dug out the paper from the fireplace and there it was.” She emailed her entry and was selected as the winner of a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.

When Don White was driving to Walmart last Saturday, he drove past the cupola nestled between Walmart and Lowe’s and said to himself, ”That would be a great mystery photo for Russ Dillingham.” He could not believe it when he opened up his newspaper the day after thinking that and there it was. White grew up behind the Winter Farm on Turner Street in Auburn that Frank Winter lived on until he died at 100 years old. The cupola was taken off the top of the farmhouse that sat next to Turner Street (just about where the roundabout is between Ruby Tuesday and Buffalo Wild Wings in Auburn) by the developers of the area. Those same developers asked White’s father if they could name the shopping center Whiteholm Plaza after the massive farm that encompased much of the area. White was glad to share this information, but in a random drawing, Larry Heindl of Lewiston was chosen as the winner. He knew where it was located, but also wrote “I have no clue what it is used for though, so, in next Sunday’s paper you might expound on that.” We hope the information above gives him and others a little background on the cupola that many believed was part of the Whiteholm Farm but, in fact, was just behind it on Turner Street. Anne Ceplikas of Auburn correctly identified the sculpture behind Sacred Heart hurch on Western Avenue in Auburn.“I have been going to church there for over 40 years, so I knew exactly where the photo was taken,”Ceplikas said. The sculpture references “Our Lady of Fátima,” where the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal,on the 13th day of the month for six consecutive months,beginning in May 1917. Cepilkas will receivea$10 gift card from Dunkin’ Donuts for her correct answer.

Looking up at the Hebron Community Baptist Church. The church was organized on Aug. 23, 1791, as part of Hebron Academy. Hebron Academy was founded by Revolutionary War veterans from Massachusetts who received land in the “district of Maine” as compensation for their military service. They settled the community in the late 1700s, established a church, and then chartered the school in 1804. copper minarets of the Kora Temple at the corner of Sabattus and Main streets in Lewiston. The temple was built in 1908 by the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Designed by architect George M. Coombs and built at a cost of $100,000, the building reflects Moorish and exotic revival architectural styles.Many have identified it as the most elaborate Shrine temple in America. Many readers correctly identified this as the smiley face out front of Professional Piercers of Maine/JB The Piercer Custom Body Piercing at 1205 Lisbon St. in Lewiston. Master Piercer JB Bernard and his sons, Bill and Ben,who also work there, decided they wanted to create something eye catching to attract attention. They wanted it to be as unique as they are, so they came up with this idea. That and different eyes usually match the current season or holiday. Susan Paige of Orlando, Fla. was one of many readers who correctly identified this as a 50-foot high, freestanding group of curvilinear poles at Festival Plaza in downtown Auburn that supports three colorful awnings. She wrote,“I used to sit under them each and everyWednesday night when I wasamember of the Auburn Community Band.”The awnings are due to be hung soon. One of the three remaining of the six that were originally purchased has been out for repair.The entire structure, from the poles to the fabric,was designed and made by artist Charles Duvall of Rockport for $170,000. There were more than 100 people who correctly identified this as Cumston Hall in downtown Monmouth. In a random drawing, Clavet was selected as the winner of a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. Cumston Hall has been listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings since 1976. Dr. Charles Cumston donated funds for the building in 1899. Dr. Cumston commissioned Harry Cochrane, an accomplished painter,writer, composer and musician, to design the building. Cochrane’s design transformed Cumston’s vision for a town hall into a grand building, with an opera hall, library, caucus room and town office, all in one. Cumston Hall was built in just one year at a cost of $20,000. About 6 years ago a man selling wood carvings out of the back of his truck stopped at Ari’s Pizza on Main Street in Norway and asked owner Chris Farrar if he was interested in buying one. His employees convinced him to buy it and he put it in front of his business. “It’s in serious need of a paint job” Farrar said. “When I was in high school I used to work there, and years later, I owned a business next door. I have since moved away, and am dying for one of their pizzas, so I need to go back and visit soon,” said winner Chris Ryan of Boothbay.

Several dozen people correctly identified the painted trailer in the parking lot of Lewiston Redemption and Discount Beverage on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. Adam Massey, 10, of Lewiston,knew it as soon as he saw it in the Sun Journal. “I go there all the time with mymomto return bottles. It was created by Jay Piscopo for the Harbour Lights promotional venture a number of years ago.When it was auctioned off, Lou Black of Hebron bought it to put in his front yard to help advertise his yard sale. Black has since moved it to his barn where he is removing the ape and donating the lighthouse to the Kora Temple. They will be using it during this year’s Festival of Trees which has a nautical theme.

Tammy Asselin of Lewiston, along with several dozen others, correctly identified the outer space display on the side of a barn at Harvest Hill Farms in Mechanic Falls.According to Harvest Hill Farms owner Peter Bolduc, the spaceship was constructed about 15 years ago by Jeff Strout out of a satellite dish cut in half. Four years ago,when he bought the farm, he moved it and mounted in on the 3D barn.

Many readers correctly identified this as the practice green at Springbrook Golf Club in Leeds.The silo in the background was once part of the working farm owned by theWoolworth Estate that raised Angus cattle but now houses the clubhouse. In 1965, former Hall of Fame PGA professional Al Biondi bought the property and opened the golf course in 1966. Justin Moreau, 11, of Lewiston knew exactly where last week’s mystery photo was taken as he often plays and reads books in “The Castle” in the children’s department on the third floor of the Lewiston Public Library. According to LPL Director Rick Speer, “The Castle” was designed in 1999 by Andy Hyland of Port City Architects. It replaced the very popular “Mouse Hole” that was a fixture in the old library from 1978- 1995.

Robert Cloud Jr. of Bryant Pond, who correctly identified the covered bridge in Newry, which spans the Sunday River. Robert said he once worked for Sunday River Ski Area and brought many visitors to the bridge for moose tours, outdoor adventures and wedding ceremonies that took place on the bridge. Built in 1872, the structure is named the Artist’s Bridge because of its reputation as being the most photographed and painted of the covered bridges in Maine. Using an 87-foot Paddleford truss construction, the bridge was closed to motorized traffic in 1958 when a new bridge was built downstream. It is located about 4 miles northwest of North Bethel.

David Tedford of Poland was the only person to correctly identify one of the benches and light poles in Depot Square Transportation Center in Mechanic Falls, though he called it Dana Lee Park. There is a rock with a plaque to honor the service of former town manager Dana Lee and because of the plaque,many people refer to the park as the Dana Lee Park. According to Town Manager John Hawley, the official name is still Depot Square Transportation Center.

Laura Brown of Poland Spring was chosen in a random drawing as the winner of a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. She stated that the mystery photo was taken at the Maine State Building in Poland Spring of the beautiful skylight that is on the top of the building.“I have grown up in that building since a year-and-one-half old. I have been giving tours for years.”The building was built in 1893 for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago as the state’s entry. In 1894, it was dismantled, each piece marked and put onto a 16-car freight train and brought to Danville Junction. From there, itwas put on horse and wagon and brought to Poland Spring. It took three days to get from Chicago to Poland Spring.The building was a library and art gallery for the guests of the Poland Spring Resort. It now serves as a museum, art gallery and gift shop for the Poland Spring Preservation Society.

Susan Clayton of Lewiston identified the old walking bridge across the canal on Oxford Street in Lewiston that she,and thousands of others,once crossed to get to and from work at the mills and factories along the river. Fifty years ago,when she was 16, she worked as an inspector on the third floor of Belmore Shoe, then located in the building directly across from the bridge.The building has most recently housed Maine Line Industries and PAMCOShoe Manufacturing. Heidi Provencher of Rumford knew where this is because it is the first place she brings friends who visit to have their photo taken with Babe the Blue Ox at the top of Congress Street in Rumford, next to the Rite Aid store and across the street from the American Legion. In 2009, selectmen voted 3-1 to take $6,500 from the town’s economic development funds to buy the six-foot high, 10-foot long bovine from a Wisconsin company . They were hoping it would draw people to the downtown area who would also visit the stores and shops. It became a controversial issue but is now a popular addition to the giant Paul Bunyan across town at the Information Center.

The majority of calls and emails incorrectly identifying the doors at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Ash Street in Lewiston. However, Joe Saucier, our winner,who lives across the street from the Basilica,knew better because he used to go through the doors to attend Mass at the former St. Mary’s Church on Cedar Street in Lewiston. In 1907 St. Mary’s Parish was established in the Little Canada neighborhood. Today it serves as a performing arts center,museum, function hall, and learning center.
