Todd Lester, from Lewiston Water & Sewer Division, removes a steam hose from a frozen fire hydrant at the corner of Frye and College Streets in Lewiston Monday afternoon. The crews routinely inspect the hydrants throughout the winter to make sure they have not become frozen from a slow leak or after being used by the fire department. After use the 6 feet of water at the bottom needs to be pumped out. If they become frozen for any reason, like this one, they can not be used when called upon and there is a possibility of the pipe breaking when the water freezes. (Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal)
